Blast from the Past!

Sawasdee-kop home dawgs! What’s new with everyone?!?! It's been kinda lonely in the B-Kok Stewart household lately. Mommy and I are on week number two with daddy away on a biz trip in Tokyo. I don’t know if it’s my inherent pack instincts, but life is so much better when we’re all together. Only three more days to go!!! All I can say is daddy better not come home empty handed!! I’ve seen pics of some of the cute long-haired doxies living in Tokyo, and I think it’s about time I deserve a girlfriend to play with! I’m not too picky, but preferably she’ll have long, flowing golden-blonde hair, blue eyes, and maybe a few dapple freckles. Not too much to ask for in my humble opinion…a guy can dream, right!?!

How much is that puppy in the window??? YIKES!

Anyways, I’m here with a long overdue report for a trip back in October of last year. This wasn’t just any trip….this was the BIG ONE! I'm of course referring to my parent’s two week honeymoon to gorgeous Mauritius. Or what I like to call it, their “hornymoon.” Hehehe! Upon returning from the 2-week retreat, we we’re all immediately forced into flood survival mode. Remember all that craziness? Bangkok was under constant threat of flooding at any moment, there were food and water shortages, crocodiles and green mamba snakes on the loose!!! Need I say more?!? We had some pretty big problems to deal with, and at one point even chose to evacuate and get the freak out of the city!! Things have calmed down for now (at least until the next rainy season in a few months), so I can finally give you a personal peak into the spectacular Mauritian paradise they enjoyed together.

Phoenix Beer Ad
A surprise romantic bubble bath! Arranged for them by their room attendant.
9-10-11!!! The day mommy and daddy said I DO!!!!
BLING BLING!!!
Kenwood Vineyards....the wine that brought my parents together! This bottle should get some frequent flyer miles! It traveled all the way from California to Bangkok, and then to Mauritius! It was happily enjoyed while on their honeymoon :)
"You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven, and that heaven was copied after Mauritius."  True that, Marky Twain!! Mauritius is a small island located off the coast of Madagascar with significant Indian, French, Creole, and African influences. It was also the only home of the now extinct dodo bird. Without the ability to fly, the poor little guy got picked off pretty quick :( RIP little dodo buddy.

Le Dodo
After fifteen hours of flying and a short layover in Jo-Berg, South Africa, my parents finally arrived in Mauritius!!! They quickly fell in love with the lush, tropical beauty of this South Indian ocean island paradise. Cruising from the airport to the hotel--windows down, enjoying the fresh air, not sweating at all (unheard of in BKK!)--they soon realized these next 14 days would be the perfect opportunity to FINALLY disconnect from the rest of the world and relax. The only slight hiccup was an unfortunate speeding ticket while rolling through Port Louis. Those darn speed traps!! They were only 6km over the speed limit too!

The Grand Mauritian Resort and Spa

Take me there!!!

Perfect place to take a lil' snoozle!!
Daddy kicking his feet up and RELAXING!
HeyO!!!!
Happy Newlyweds :)
Priority #1 upon arrival at the Grand Mauritian Hotel…HEAD TO THE BEACH!!! Any doxie knows a swim in the warm ocean and a nap on the cushy sunbeds under the shade of palm trees is the perfect cure for jet lag! After a few hours in the sun, they headed into town to pick up some groceries. Phoenix beer, cheap (delicious!) French wine, Mauritian rum, cheese, salami, a fresh baguette, sardines, some fried Indian munchies, and a few pamplemousses (grapefruits)…just the absolute essentials!

Check out those pamplemousses!!!
The next two weeks were jam packed with all sorts of fun activities. A waterfall excursion, a visit to a rum distillery, snorkeling in Turtle Bay, shopping in Port Louis, exploring all the island’s beautiful and many times hidden beaches, cruising in their stick-shift Renault (which Mommy eventually took out on the back roads to rally and learn how to drive a manual transmission!), and of course plenty of evenings simply spent sipping rum and fresh juice on their balcony. This was all marked by some of the most spectacular Southern Hemisphere sunsets they had ever seen. It was relaxing and romantic to say the least, as a honeymoon indeed should be! The perfect cherry on top of all their wonderful wedding experiences thus far. Dogs like me can really sense peoples emotions, and I can tell they're both so happy and thankful for everyone and everything in their life!

Pure yumminess!!!
Drive it like you stole it!!!
Downtown Port Louis
Going BaNaNas!!!!
If mommy had her way, we'd have a hot pink front door too ;)
Some friends they met while cruisin' through town!
Snorkel Time! Trying to find Nemo!
This was a bit of a splurge, but you know what they say....when in Mauritius!!!

Beach Henna
Huge fruit bat hanging outside their villa window. At least I hope he's a fruit bat...gulp!

On their very last day in paradise, literally the moment they were signing the bill upon departure, the unthinkable happened. The usually gentle trade winds suddenly shifted, and a piece of burning ash from a nearby sugar cane fire landed on the hotel’s thatched roof, quickly engulfing it in flames. Luckily no one was injured, but when the fire was finally put out several hours later, seven villas, the main restaurant and the hotel lobby were all destroyed. They drove away from the hotel with smoke and flames in their rear view mirror, local Mauritian fire brigades blasting past them in the opposite direction, horns blaring. It was a bittersweet departure, and their thoughts certainly went out to the kind and friendly employees that had made their stay so memorable. Since the lobby was completely burned down, they secretly (and very guiltily of course) had their fingers crossed their credit card information might have been destroyed in the fire. Several weeks had passed, but eventually that charge DEFINITELY hit the AMEX. They didn't mind though. Two weeks of pure Mauritian bliss, tucked away down in the warm waters of the South Indian ocean...it was worth every rupee!

Unfortunately their honeymoon hotel is still closed for renovation from the fire damage :(

Doesn't get much better than this :)

Sri Lanka....Heaven on Earth

OK…Picture this. Gorgeous blue, sunny skies. Palm trees cascading out over crystal clear, turquoise water. Velvety, cream-colored sand that slips between your toes unnoticed. And perhaps the best part of all? No crowds…in fact practically no people at all, except for maybe the cow that’s found her way to your beach by mistake. For me, this image of paradise is simply a figment of my little Dachshund imagination, but for my parents, it was a reality. These beaches may seem far-fetched, but in Sri Lanka they’re plentiful! At least I can daydream about our trip to Hua Hin a while back…those memories should curb my jealously a bit.

Liquid Gooooold!!!

Happy cows come from Sri Lanka! And California too!!!

The day my parents arrived in Mirissa Beach, Sri Lanka, after a long drive from the airport, they were warmly greeted with what at first looked like a local Mardi Gras celebration. Loud music, elaborate body art, incredible costumes, and hundreds of dancing, topless….*men*. I mean, if somehow we threw in some boobies and beads this could be a scene straight out of New Orleans! Lucky for my parents though, it was the annual Mirissa Fishermen’s Festival. The men paraded around town, dancing and celebrating all the year’s hard work and countless hours at sea away from their families. The parade ended at a school where the men divided into two teams. They then began throwing coconuts at one another, and the team who smashed the most coconuts won. Sounds pretty crazy and I’m not sure of the exact rules of this game, but that was the basic description given to my parents by a local bystander. Sounds like fun, but I try to avoid any activities where nuts fly at my face.

Sassy Party Girl!

Later that afternoon my parents headed to the stunning beach not more than a two minutes’ walk away to soak up some sun. While relaxing under a beach cabana and sipping fresh watermelon juice, they were suddenly in awe at what they saw next. A SEA TURTLE had swam ashore!!! It was no accident either. She was on a mission to lay her eggs on this beach, despite the small group of eager bystanders that had gathered around to witness this once in a lifetime sight. My parents watched as she diligently and patiently dug her nest, did her duty, covered her precious eggs with sand, and then mysteriously headed back to sea. An absolutely surreal moment they will never forget. I can only imagine what an amazing feeling this must have been to be part of such a rare moment for Mother Nature.

It's Baby Makin' Time!

Just grabbing a few coconuts!

Day two of their spectacular Sri Lankan adventure was all about worshipping the sun, swimming in the cerulean bath-water warm ocean, and really, REALLY good seafood, washed down of course with more than a few local Lion beers! They ended their evening at a small café on the beach, utterly and completely relaxed as they watched surfers from around the world take turns trying to get the best ride on the point break waves at Mirissa. As if this wasn’t enough to define a perfect day, the late-night walk back to their beach bungalow was marked by abundant fireflies kindly guiding them home. I seriously only thought fireflies were in movies…kind of a big deal for us Californians. It was magical to say the least.

Ahhhhhhhh....

Surf's Up Dude!!!

Not a person in sight :)

Sharing a few glasses of arrack (fermented coconut fire water) with the owner of Club Mirissa Guest House and a few of his friends!

After a restful night under the protection of their mosquito net and the cool breezes from the ocean nearby, they decided to get adventurous on their third and final day in Mirissa. My parents hired a tuk tuk driver to tour them around the SouthWest coastal cities. When I say tuk tuk driver I want to be very clear: She isn’t just any tuk tuk driver, she is the only female tuk tuk driver in all of Mirissa! Malika was an excellent driver, and knew both the popular destinations as well as the hidden gems they had to see. It also seemed like she knew someone in every place they stopped, including even the local police!

Girl Power!!

Policia!!!
Day number four, my parents decided to forego the traditional transfer by car and instead hopped on an old diesel locomotive train for their journey back to Colombo. This was easily one of the highlights of the entire trip, and seriously recommended if you ever want to see the “real” Sri Lanka. The beaches were beyond beautiful and hold a special place in their heart, but this train ride was unlike anything either of them had ever done. The train hugged the coastline the entire journey, passing through ancient villages and small towns along the way, many of which were sadly destroyed by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami (which also greatly damaged parts of southern Thailand). There was no air conditioning and the seats were of course first-come, first-serve. But the tickets cost a whopping 80 Sri Lankan Rupees ($0.64), and they traveled over 45km with some of the most picturesque scenery they had ever seen just outside their rail car. $0.64...that’s freakin’ ridiculous! Why even charge!?! The breeze through the open-air windows and the occasional kiss of saltwater splashing against the train made for a very relaxing ride. Mommy and daddy were the only foreigners on the train, but quickly got lost in the crowd of Sri Lankans leaning/dangling/hanging outside the windows. In a nutshell…Absolutely amazing, and something they will hold very dear for years to come!

Chugga chugga chugga  chugga  CHOOOOOO CHOOOOOO!!!

My parents finished off their trip with a delightful afternoon of people watching and yummy beachside snacks at the Galle Face in Colombo. Seeing family and friends fly kites, splash in the warm waters of the Indian ocean, and enjoy their carefree Sunday afternoon was quite a treat for mommy and daddy. After the sun had dipped well below the horizon they retired for the night, memory cards full of vivid images they will never forget for the rest of their life…eager to return to this little slice of Heaven on Earth.

What's so funny fellas???
